Great Eco-Friendly Christmas Gift Ideas

It’s the most wonderful time of the year to have an eco-friendly Christmas by going green, reducing waste, being kind to the environment, and buying eco-friendly gifts this season.

Christmas is the most loved time of the year that brings the family together, yet it also consists of lavish meals, gifts, unnecessary gift wrapping, and lots of wasted food. These habits are built over the years and are usually difficult to get rid of.

A few new traditions can be created, keeping the old ones also intact that would bind families together and make them feel safe and comfortable, and we can create those traditions this year by opting for eco-friendly Christmas decorations, trees, and gifts.

We talk all things design with Pamela Davidson

When designing your children’s bedroom, we like to say— just go for it! Don’t be afraid to add a splash of colour or throw in a couple of statement pieces. After all, your kid’s bedroom is a great little space to explore your imagination and express your creativity; its the perfect excuse to be as bold or as whimsical you want.

Here at One Two Tree, we never fail to be inspired by the very many ways that our lovely customers choose to put their own personal touch to our products. So, when we saw how Pamela (@pamela__davidson) chose to style our Australian Treasure Board as a statement piece that fit in wonderfully with her little one’s nursery, we knew that we had to pick her brains about all things design.

Australian Treasure Board fits in perfectly with any existing children's decor

What stood out about the Australian Treasure Board?

As soon as I saw the Australia Treasure board I knew I wanted to include it in Theo’s room. I fell in love with its unique design; it is very original and unlike anything else I had ever seen, which is a rarity these days. I also loved the natural timber construction— not only does it look good, but it would go with anything I decided to style it with.

I knew it was perfect for our family as it is a piece we will keep forever, and it pays homage to the beautiful country we are lucky to call home.

How did you decide to dress up your Australian Treasure Board?

I had a handful of special items and gifts that were getting lost amongst the endless amount of toys that have accumulated for Theo. The Australian Treasure Board is the perfect place to display these special pieces. All of the items on display are ‘firsts’ for Theo. The matryoshka doll set is the very first toy I bought Theo, before he was even born. I love seeing it all on display everyday.

What are some features that you look out for when choosing decor for your children’s rooms?

First and foremost I love investing in good quality pieces that will stand the test of time. It needs to be constructed well, and made of high quality, natural materials. With kids, this is so important as they have a tendency of getting into everything!

I love choosing decor that can also double as a toy, so if they are left out after playtime they still look great, and provide the room with different dimensions and textures, from soft knitted toys to timber blocks.

Do you have any general styling tips to share with our readers who are preparing their children’s rooms/ nurseries?

Books help to add a pop of colour in your kid's bedroom

Start with a neutral base, this will set the tone when establishing the foundations of your room or nursery. Big-ticket items such as cots, drawers and shelving are timeless in hues of white, grey or a natural timber, providing you with the perfect blank canvas.

You can then begin to add pops of colour once you have your key items in place. Along with prints and linen, I find books to be a really effective way to liven up a room. Not only are they great for a child’s development, but the book covers themselves are mini works of art that look so good on display. It is also easy to change up the style of the room by swapping around your books, whether it be going all monochrome, a rainbow of colours or focusing on one particular hue.

Unlike other spaces in your home, when it comes to children’s rooms and play areas, more is more! Don’t be afraid to place prints over the top of wallpaper or have an abundance of books on display. And most importantly, have fun with it all!

Easy as One Two Tree with Mikaela from @mowgliandthebear_

Mowgliandthebear chats about how she loves her Playhouse Treasure Board

Our Playhouse Treasure Board is one of the most loved items from our collection, and what’s there not to love about it? Beautifully cut into the shape of a modern house, it acts as the perfect blank canvas for your youngin’s imagination to fill.

Despite how sophisticated the finished product looks, you won’t believe how effortless it is to assemble. With just a few slips and slides, the pieces of plywood will easily fit together to become your very own Treasure Board— no power tools required! We love that the simplicity of the assembly not only means that it’ll leave you with heaps of time to decorate your Playhouse Treasure Board to your heart’s content, but it also means that you will be able get your whole family involved for a little fuss-free DIY project!

Playhouse Treasure Board is as easy to fix as one two tree

We caught up with Mikaela, better known as @mowgliandthebear_, to find out how she chose to style her Playhouse Treasure Board.

What stood out about the Playhouse Treasure Board? Why did you think it best suited your family?

I have been looking for a shelf for Omri’s room for some time.  I love the playful and fun nature of the playhouse treasure board.  I particularly love that it can be styled and restyled again and again and change as Omri grows, which is why I chose it over a piece of art.  I can imagine that the board will be a space where he can express his interests; that it may one day hold dinosaurs or diggers. I also am thinking I will create an event calendar with the board for the boys to count down to Christmas.

Playhouse treasure board

Tell us about the assembly of the product— was it difficult to do?

I loved how simple the Treasure Board was to put together. I usually have to wait for my hubby to put things together, but this board required no tools and was almost like a jigsaw.  I was able to put it together myself with Kemba handing me each piece easily.

What did you think about the quality of the product?

The Playhouse Treasure Board is very good quality, each piece fits together perfectly.  The shelves are stable and each join is neat. It will be a piece that will remain with the boys for their entire childhood.

Playhouse Treasure Board fits in easily with any children's decor

How did you choose where to place the Treasure Board in your children’s bedroom and how to dress it up?

Omri’s room is quite small so there were only two real spots that would work for placing the treasure board. I got my husband to hold the board up in both places, and we finally decided on its location alongside the other shelving as we felt that it really fit that space well.

Decorate your Playhouse Treasure Board with all your little knick knacks

Could you share some styling tips with our readers?

At the moment I have styled the treasure board with wooden toys in natural and muted tones that match with the décor and feel of Omri’s room (A combination of pinch toys, captain cash cacti and love tildy). I prefer simple styles of items with similar tones, and empty space rather than crowding.

Rebecca Judd features One Two Tree in The Style School

We have super exciting news to share! One Two Tree has recently collaborated with Etsy Australia and lifestyle/fashion blogger Rebecca Judd for her blog, The Style School.

Etsy kindly flew us down to Melbourne to be a part of an episode of The Style School. The blog has done a series of interior design blog posts/episodes and we were lucky enough to be featured in one.

judd_hintonlane8131

In one of their latest episodes titled Etsy Kids Bedroom, a few of our products can be seen. This particular episode shows viewers on how to decorate children’s bedrooms with some amazing locally made products from Etsy Australia (including us!).

The adorable wombat, crocodile and kangaroo from our Little Aussie Treasures collection made an appearance in the episode. Our animal friends were also joined by our Rainbow Set, which shared the spotlight with other beautiful products from Etsy.

Rebecca Judd feature One Two Tree

Rebecca Judd feature One Two Tree-2

Also featured in the episode was our Message Board. Rebecca had her 9×3 board customised with her own message: ‘Where the cool kids are’. Of course, you can personalise it anyway you want for your kids but who can argue with that one?

Rebecca Judd feature One Two Tree-3

Rebecca’s stylist Aimee Tarulli suggested that by having a specific colour theme makes it harder for kids to enjoy their rooms as they get older. So having our Little Aussie Treasures in its natural wooden shade, like in the episode, is perfect for any age.

Another tip from the episode was to style the room an age bracket up. It keeps the room interesting, as it’s not too young or too cutesy. Keep your kiddo’s room young and fresh for years to come by having these cute ‘toys’ and decorations up on display.

Little treasures in the making

Currently in the One Two Tree studio, we are in the midst of a very exciting project. The type of project that gets our blood pumping, and our hearts in a little flutter. We’ll give you a few clues: it involves hand-crafting, some plywood (sustainably sourced, of course), and our signature touch of Australiana. Yes, we’ve got some Little Aussie Treasures in development!

We love our Aussie Treasure Board so much that we’ve decided to design some furry friends to perch upon it. Our beautiful country of Australia has some of the most unique animals in the world, and we’d like to share them with you. Meet the Wombat, Kangaroo, Echidna, the Koala that sits in the Gum Trees. And a rainbow ‘cos Australia is just our pot of gold.

We’re still in the prototyping phase, but they are already looking so darn cute! We just couldn’t keep them to ourselves! Here’s a sneak peak of how the little tackers are shaping up so far:

Stay tuned for more adorable updates coming soon.

Hanging with art

With the arrival of our new 30cm Art Hanger, we thought we’d share our favourite wall hangings to inspire you with some visual goodness. Now available in three sizes: 30cm, 50cm and 70cm! You’re bound to find one that is the perfect fit for your art hanging needs.

Hang anything from your linen tea towels, wall weaves, kids masterpieces. From collages to photographic prints and more. The plywood and natural tan leather string provides the perfect canvas for showcasing your art in a clean and minimal style.

With the larger 50cm and 70cm Art Hangers, a fab trick we love is hanging two smaller pieces side by side. A great idea for collating your kid’s artworks or a mini-series of artworks.

It is oh so simple to swap and change artworks on a regular basis for a refreshed feel. The Art Hanger – simple in design, but so genius in nature.

Care instructions:
Here’s a little tip for framing a precious paper piece of art. Cut one strip of paper or card, fold in it half and sandwich the original between them, then place it inside the Art Hanger. Firstly, this protects the corners of the original and secondly, it provides a better grip for any of your lighter weight papers. This is also a good idea if you are framing any pastel work, or anything that could smudge the Art Hanger. Our Art Hangers are raw and naturally unstained. Therefore, it needs a little bit of care and attention.

Little Treasure

My Treasure Board

A little over a year ago I began developing ideas for things to decorate my son’s room with. I ended up designing what is now known as the My Treasure Board. It was named ‘treasure’ after all the little trinkets and prized possessions you could display upon it. But also as an ode to our beautiful island nation.

Where else in the world can you find such wide-open landscapes displaying such a contrast of rich colours and textures? Our land is one of a unique mixture of luscious bushland, sunburnt plains and white sandy beaches. Home to many animals that are found nowhere else in the world. And home to people of many different backgrounds, cultures, religions and histories.

Let’s never forget to protect our natural environments – on-land, and under the sea. Let’s never forget to respect and be kind to one another. This Australia Day, and every other day, let’s never forget to continually discover, appreciate and enjoy the simple pleasures and beauties of this treasured land.

alpha prints launching at Life Instyle

We’ve been working overtime around here to get something brand new, fresh, up and running. And the big shock – it’s not wood-related at all! With a background in screen-printing and textiles, I loved the idea of developing a range of One Two Tree wall art. With the Life Instyle trade fair coming up, it was the perfect time to produce some work of our own to display with our popular Art Hanger. We managed to turn this project around in record time purely due to the incredible talent and hard work of our graphic design intern, James. And now, here we are! The new range is all about two of our biggest loves – alphabets and letters, and fun nautical vibes.

Alpha Prints by One Two Tree 4

I’m sure it’s clear by now how much we love our letters. As sign-making aficionados, we thought it only appropriate to do a range of gorgeously graphic alphabet prints and textiles. We’ve done A, B and C in a range of contrasting colours on the highest quality linen or 220GSM matt paper. PLUS the entire alphabet in a few striking colour-ways, so you can get a custom Alpha paper print.

Alpha Prints by One Two Tree

We’ve always been a pretty nautical-loving bunch in my household, often decorating with nautical accents for a fun, beachside-living look. Plus, with three boys in the house, sailors and pirates and captains are all the rage around here. We have this gorgeous vintage nautical flag at home that hangs in pride of place, which inspired our re-imagining of the nautical alphabet, bringing in the contemporary aesthetic of One Two Tree. Available on high quality linen or 230GSM matt paper, we’ve put together eight designs to suit everyone. From the monochrome modernist to the colour-pop contemporary. All with those ‘fun nautical vibes’ I mentioned. So, welcome to the family, brand-new wall candy. We hope you love it all, but might I say, we’re feeling pretty chuffed!

New product – my treasure board

My Treasure Board - girl style

I don’t know how often you stop to think about it, but there’s a definite beauty and aesthetic to the shape of our beloved land of Australia. I had never really considered it, until in a vintage store I came across an old teaspoon rack shaped in the same way. The silhouette really struck me.

I’d been looking for things to put up in my son’s room. A boy’s bedroom is a bit tricky, I think, when you don’t want to just overdose on prints. I figured an Australia shelf would fit him perfectly, and he could display his most cherished toys. You know, action heroes, matchbox cars and the like.

So I began to develop the My Treasure Board. ‘Treasure’ because of the prized possessions you’d display upon it, but also the idea of ‘national treasure’. I was building a love letter to our sunburnt country, One Two Tree style!

It took serious time to get it right. There’s a reason not many of those teaspoon racks included Tasmania, or used chains to do so! I wanted to include it without any added hardware, only wood. Also to be able to flat pack it and give the user a build-my-own experience, so it couldn’t get too complex. Eventually we got the shelves interlocking just right, so no one needs to feel left out.

Now I love that Ziggy knows what his birth country looks like, and he can easily point to Sydney, where we live. The natural wood grain finish is a beautiful backdrop to his colourful prized possessions, and his boys room wall candy is all sorted!

meet the family

Family portrait-2

Hello again! It’s been pretty quiet in this corner of the blogosphere, and we’re here to make amends.

Since our last little blog update, we’ve welcomed into the world the newest member of our family, Rhodes. We’ve been through all that life, world and brain re-adjusting one does when a new baby comes home with you! He’s now fourteen months and owning life, of course.

But we’re here today to say we’re back on track! We have (you may have noticed) some fresh new products, new collaborations, and even more to come. Keep your eye on One Two Tree, 2015 has been big so far and it doesn’t look like slowing down!

crystal pyramid poms – decorations now instore

pom one two tree 1

If you’re loving the decorations you see in the picture above well so do we. So much so we are now stocking the Crystal Pyramid Poms online in our shop right now for you to purchase.

Made by the talented artistic duo Dear Plastic they come in a DIY pack of four with easy to follow instructions and beautiful twine string to hang them straight onto your One Two Tree.

We discovered Dear Plastic online and instantly fell in love with their colourful creative ways. Handmade with a watercolor finish each POM is truly captivating and so vibrant and they truly complement our One Two Tree.

We asked Yumi and Taki from Dear Plastic five quick questions

1. How did Dear Plastic form? Dear Plastic started organically. Just the two of us creating and developing ideas together and making things for friends. I guess 3 years ago we decided that we wanted to develop it further and work on our ideas full time.

2. Is this a full time career for you both? Yes.

3. How does sustainability and the environment play a role in your work? The environment and nature is a big influence on our work. We both have a strong connection with Shinto belief and the idea that everything has a Spirit or God. This respect for everything around us leads to sustainable ideas. I guess that keeps us always thinking of ways of creating ideas that have the least impact on the environment.

4. What does POM stand for? POM is the sound of fireworks exploding in Japanese! Our POM’s turn from 2D to 3D over and over again by pulling a string and we think it similar to fireworks going off!

5. What’s next for dear plastic, new products? exhibitions? We are working on a window installation for Pieces of Eight gallery in Melbourne at the moment. That will open on the 3rd of Dec. We will have a stall at the upcoming  Markit at Fed Square in Melbourne and then at Finders Keepers in Sydney. We’re really interested in collaborating and working on larger spaces for installations.

We hope you like them as much as we do.

diy : mini paper medallion decorations by Minieco

one two tree paper flower 22We can’t take full credit for these beautiful paper medallions. We discovered them on the amazing website http://www.minieco.co.uk filled with so much paper crafting eye candy. You can easily spend hours perusing over all of the many DIY creations.

The medallions looked like an achievable start for me. I downloaded the free template and printed it on some coloured paper purchased from my local office supply store. I spent a good afternoon and evening cutting, folding and sewing together these beautiful little flowers.

Minieco has step by step directions and lists everything you will need to make them! She also provides you with templates to all of her many craft creations.

We made about 25 flowers and stuck them to our One Two Tree with blue-tak. You can easily tie little ribbons or string to the flowers and hang them in a spiral formation.

I hope our pictures inspire you. Happy paper crafting.

diy : rainbow wrapped ceramic stars

ceramic stars-6

Making your own Christmas decorations is not only rewarding. It’s also fun and it gives your One Two Tree a really lovely home made feel. With a little creativity and a bit of motivation you can easily make our rainbow wrapped ceramic stars. Not only do they look beautiful, they’re a simple craft activity perfect for the kids to join in too.

You will need: star shaped cookie cutters, a rolling pin, rainbow string or wool and air drying modelling clay. DAS modelling clay would be our choice if you were going to go for the prepacked stuff which you can easily purchase from any craft shop. We used some recycled clay from a friends ceramic studio which we had to fire in a kiln. Obviously we don’t all have access to a kiln and a potters studio, so this is where the air drying stuff comes in very handy.

SUPPLIES PIC

Just like if you were making cookies, you roll out your clay flat to just under a 1cm thick. Best to do it either on a breadboard or cutting mat. Then you simply press your star cutters into the clay and transfer your perfect shaped stars onto a tray to air dry. Leave them to dry for 24hrs. If they feel a little uneven or rough get a wet sponge and lightly rub the clay smooth. We left our stars without a tiny hole in them as we wanted to wrapped them in rainbow string. If you wanted to leave them plain you could pierce the top of the stars before they are completely air dried with a drinking straw to create an even hole. That way you can easily loop them with the string and tie a knot.

Once your stars are air dried and hard to touch cut off roughly 30cm of string. Then experiment with wrapping and knotting different combinations around your stars. Then cut roughly 12cm of string so you can tie a loop and place the stars at the ends of your tree branches. Attach your loop string by threading it through the wrapped design and tie off the ends.

Other ideas. We left our stars plain white but you could easily get creative and start painting them with acrylic paints or drawing on designs. You can use Posca paint pens, two toning them with spray paint or stenciling on a design. Apply gold leaf, add glitter, glue on plastic gems or beads. Raid your local craft store. There are so many options. When your stars are still soft you can embossed them with buttons, shells, stamp designs and scribe in words or letters. Another idea is to mosaic them with the prepacked and pre cut tiny squares you can buy from spotlight. So many choices and so many ways to sparkle up your One Two Tree this Christmas. Stay tuned for more DIY’s to come. If you have any questions please feel free to get in contact with us. Happy Crafting!

tin soldiers stand tall

Tin Soldiers

A great idea for decorating your One Two Tree is to either hang or place tin soldiers at either end of your branches. We have just slightly twisted our branches in pair’s to form a partial spiral. Without over crowding the tree we have placed a soldier on every second branch. The possibilities are endless. By the way we found our wooden Tin Soldiers at David Jones in the city for $7.99 each.
