We talk all things design with Pamela Davidson

When designing your children’s bedroom, we like to say— just go for it! Don’t be afraid to add a splash of colour or throw in a couple of statement pieces. After all, your kid’s bedroom is a great little space to explore your imagination and express your creativity; its the perfect excuse to be as bold or as whimsical you want.

Here at One Two Tree, we never fail to be inspired by the very many ways that our lovely customers choose to put their own personal touch to our products. So, when we saw how Pamela (@pamela__davidson) chose to style our Australian Treasure Board as a statement piece that fit in wonderfully with her little one’s nursery, we knew that we had to pick her brains about all things design.

Australian Treasure Board fits in perfectly with any existing children's decor

What stood out about the Australian Treasure Board?

As soon as I saw the Australia Treasure board I knew I wanted to include it in Theo’s room. I fell in love with its unique design; it is very original and unlike anything else I had ever seen, which is a rarity these days. I also loved the natural timber construction— not only does it look good, but it would go with anything I decided to style it with.

I knew it was perfect for our family as it is a piece we will keep forever, and it pays homage to the beautiful country we are lucky to call home.

How did you decide to dress up your Australian Treasure Board?

I had a handful of special items and gifts that were getting lost amongst the endless amount of toys that have accumulated for Theo. The Australian Treasure Board is the perfect place to display these special pieces. All of the items on display are ‘firsts’ for Theo. The matryoshka doll set is the very first toy I bought Theo, before he was even born. I love seeing it all on display everyday.

What are some features that you look out for when choosing decor for your children’s rooms?

First and foremost I love investing in good quality pieces that will stand the test of time. It needs to be constructed well, and made of high quality, natural materials. With kids, this is so important as they have a tendency of getting into everything!

I love choosing decor that can also double as a toy, so if they are left out after playtime they still look great, and provide the room with different dimensions and textures, from soft knitted toys to timber blocks.

Do you have any general styling tips to share with our readers who are preparing their children’s rooms/ nurseries?

Books help to add a pop of colour in your kid's bedroom

Start with a neutral base, this will set the tone when establishing the foundations of your room or nursery. Big-ticket items such as cots, drawers and shelving are timeless in hues of white, grey or a natural timber, providing you with the perfect blank canvas.

You can then begin to add pops of colour once you have your key items in place. Along with prints and linen, I find books to be a really effective way to liven up a room. Not only are they great for a child’s development, but the book covers themselves are mini works of art that look so good on display. It is also easy to change up the style of the room by swapping around your books, whether it be going all monochrome, a rainbow of colours or focusing on one particular hue.

Unlike other spaces in your home, when it comes to children’s rooms and play areas, more is more! Don’t be afraid to place prints over the top of wallpaper or have an abundance of books on display. And most importantly, have fun with it all!

Rebecca Judd features One Two Tree in The Style School

We have super exciting news to share! One Two Tree has recently collaborated with Etsy Australia and lifestyle/fashion blogger Rebecca Judd for her blog, The Style School.

Etsy kindly flew us down to Melbourne to be a part of an episode of The Style School. The blog has done a series of interior design blog posts/episodes and we were lucky enough to be featured in one.

judd_hintonlane8131

In one of their latest episodes titled Etsy Kids Bedroom, a few of our products can be seen. This particular episode shows viewers on how to decorate children’s bedrooms with some amazing locally made products from Etsy Australia (including us!).

The adorable wombat, crocodile and kangaroo from our Little Aussie Treasures collection made an appearance in the episode. Our animal friends were also joined by our Rainbow Set, which shared the spotlight with other beautiful products from Etsy.

Also featured in the episode was our Message Board. Rebecca had her 9×3 board customised with her own message: ‘Where the cool kids are’. Of course, you can personalise it anyway you want for your kids but who can argue with that one?

Rebecca Judd feature One Two Tree-3

Rebecca’s stylist Aimee Tarulli suggested that by having a specific colour theme makes it harder for kids to enjoy their rooms as they get older. So having our Little Aussie Treasures in its natural wooden shade, like in the episode, is perfect for any age.

Another tip from the episode was to style the room an age bracket up. It keeps the room interesting, as it’s not too young or too cutesy. Keep your kiddo’s room young and fresh for years to come by having these cute ‘toys’ and decorations up on display.

Celebrating a creative and sustainable Christmas

The festive season always gets us reminiscing about where we first started. Four years ago, we made our first family Christmas tree out of leftover hardwood and the seeds of One Two Tree were sown. We realised we had created something wonderfully unique: an eco-friendly, sustainable, stylish and quality handmade alternative to the throw-away traditional tree. Unlike the plastic ones, we made something that would last a lifetime. One of the perks of this job is seeing all the beautifully creative ways the One Two Tree Christmas Tree can be decorated and re-decorated every year.
heroslider_goodtimes

We’re constantly conscientious about the impact we have on the planet and the purchasing decisions we make. As a result, we’re inspired by quality natural materials, movers & shakers of handmade craft and honest design. We’ve always stuck to our roots of creating beautifully finished handmade objects and simple design solutions for the home. Our products are made from sustainable woods right here in Australia. Staying mindful is the key – and this time of year should be no different. Here are some of our our tips for decorating and celebrating Christmas in a creative and conscious fashion:

  • Buy quality items to last
  • Shop locally: support your local community, local craftspeople, designers and small businesses!
  • Shop second hand for vintage / unique kitsch decorations
  • Use your hands and get hand-crafting: there are stacks of tutorials and templates you can find online to get you started. See our previous blogposts for inspiration.
  • Research sustainable products and materials: involve natural materials for that rustic / fresh feel – think sustainable woods, clay, yarn, organic fabrics, sea shells, pine cones, native plants and flowers
  • If you have kids, get them involved for a fun crafternoon activity
  • Up cycle
  • Incorporate decorations from previous years for a fresh feel
  • Refresh decorations from previous years by giving them a little facelift: a fresh lick of paint, watercolours or adding some glitter
  • Energy efficient LED lighting
  • Limit plastic, packaging and cheap disposables
  • Recycle and redecorate wrapping paper / packaging / gift boxes
  • Simplicity: less is more

This Christmas, remember to watch the waste – everything we use, buy and discard everyday makes an impact. ‘Tis the season for giving, so give a little back to the Earth what you have taketh during this year’s passed. We hope these tips get you inspired this season.

Wishing you all a wonderful Christmas and festive season, from the One Two Tree family to yours.

Plywood care & maintenance

OneTwoTree close up

Recently we were asked by a customer to share some tips on plywood care for our Christmas Tree. We leave most of our timber products unfinished for a gorgeous raw and natural aesthetic. Raw timber develops character over time and ages beautifully if treated with the right care. However you do need to be mindful when it comes to care and maintenance.

Please take note of the our tips in order to keep your timber looking fab and in it’s best condition.

Tips for care & maintenance:

  • Avoid leaving the timber in direct sunlight for long periods, as exposure will slowly tan the timber over time. Our products are suited to UV filtered light. In order to maintain the plywood in it’s natural original tone, you may want to consider applying a UV timber finish.
  • Be mindful of moisture and exposure to the elements. When not in use, store the product in a dry, cool place.
  • Natural oils will stain the plywood, e.g. Blu-Tack, oily/moisturised hands, foods, flowers etc.
  • Be cautious with the raw timber around liquids. Do not leave spills to sit on the surface. Any spilt liquids will leave a watermark. Use a dry cloth to absorb spills immediately.
  • Our products require minimal cleaning – the only maintenance required is dusting. Use a dry dusting cloth to remove dust and dirt.
  • Avoid contact with heat and take care when placing abrasive objects on the timber.
  • If any scratches or nicks appear, gently sand the area with a fine grit sandpaper.
  • You can lightly sand the surfaces with a fine grit sandpaper to refresh the timber’s appearance. This should be done minimally, e.g. once every couple of years.

Our recommended finishes:

If you would like a more finished look you may add a finish to the timber. We recommend the following products which are available from your local hardware store:

  • Beeswax
  • Intergram Exterior UltraClear UV Timber Finish in Satin

Please note that when you are applying a wax or satin, it will enhance the wood a shade darker.

We do not recommend applying a lacquer finish to our products as it will marginally increase the thickness of the wood and therefore may affect how certain elements of the product interact.

Alternative Finishes:

  • Whitewashing (diluted white paint), for a faded washed out look
  • Coloured timber stains (water based only)
  • Linseed Oil, for an enriched warmer look

*Always conduct a test patch on a separate piece of timber to ensure you are happy with the desired effect.

If finishing a product with multiple parts (e.g. the One Two Tree or My Treasure Board), each part will need to be treated individually. Allow adequate time for drying/curing before reassembling the product.

We recommend and encourage the use of water-based finishes, products that are non-toxic and are free of harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Always check the materials and safety data sheet (MSDS) for detailed information on any hazardous chemicals present.

life in style, melbourne 2015

Next week we’re taking one of the biggest leaps we’ve ever taken since starting our little Aussie company. We’re exhibiting at Life Instyle in Melbourne, and boy has it been a crazy few weeks of prep for the big show!

We make no secret of how proud we are to be an all-Australian company. Sourcing sustainably grown Australian plywood, and manufacturing locally in Sydney and Melbourne. Anyone who’s ever navigated the tricky terrain of an Australian-made business will know what we mean when we say it’s not always easy going. Costs are high for our gorgeous wood products, and making them viable for wholesale is tricky. But with the support we’ve had from a few key stockists around Australia, we’ve built up the confidence to make the investment, and exhibit in a trade fair. After all, we’ve been making our beloved Christmas tree for three years now, and haven’t done it the justice of showing it off properly!

Not to mention, we’re super excited about this next chapter for One Two Tree. With our expanded product range including brand new paper and textile wall art, the Art Hanger, our popular Message Boards and everything else between.

We can’t wait to meet and (hopefully) partner with unique Australian stockists who share our passion for sustainability and Australian-made products. Come and see us upstairs at Stand 2157 and let’s make some magic happen!

Welcome

Welcome to our official One Two Tree website! We’re finally live and ready to spread our little Christmas tree far and wide. Remember that shipping to destinations within Australia is free until Christmas!

sustainability

We created One Two Tree to provide a stylish alternative to traditional Christmas trees. We also created it to promote sustainability with our environmentally friendly products.

One Two Tree is proudly hand-crafted from Australian Hoop Pine plywood. Austral Plywoods from HQPlantations (HQP) sources our beautiful wood. They are a sustainable plantation in Queensland’s lush Mary Valley.

Wood products – including plywood – are a renewable resource that play a significant role in tackling climate change. Growing trees store carbon by absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. This carbon remains locked in the wood even when used for building products or furniture.

Hoop Pine (Araucaria Cunninghamii) is a native Australian specie. It’s generally a whitish or light-colour with a straight grain and fine to very fine texture. Plywood is often used in place of wood due to its resistance to cracking, shrinking, splitting, and twisting. It is also extremely strong! That means your One Two Tree can be re-used year after year without the wear and tear of a plastic tree.

HQP is independently certified under the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) forest management standard and the Australian Forestry Standard (AFS). Both forest certification systems require HQP to meet internationally-accepted criteria for sustainable forest management covering economic, social, environmental and cultural perspectives.

For more information on the environmental advantages of using wood, visit www.naturallybetter.com.ausustainability
