I don’t know how often you stop to think about it, but there’s a definite beauty and aesthetic to the shape of our beloved land of Australia. I had never really considered it, until in a vintage store I came across an old teaspoon rack shaped in the same way. The silhouette really struck me.
I’d been looking for things to put up in my son’s room. A boy’s bedroom is a bit tricky, I think, when you don’t want to just overdose on prints. I figured an Australia shelf would fit him perfectly, and he could display his most cherished toys. You know, action heroes, matchbox cars and the like.
So I began to develop the My Treasure Board. ‘Treasure’ because of the prized possessions you’d display upon it, but also the idea of ‘national treasure’. I was building a love letter to our sunburnt country, One Two Tree style!
It took serious time to get it right. There’s a reason not many of those teaspoon racks included Tasmania, or used chains to do so! I wanted to include it without any added hardware, only wood. Also to be able to flat pack it and give the user a build-my-own experience, so it couldn’t get too complex. Eventually we got the shelves interlocking just right, so no one needs to feel left out.
Now I love that Ziggy knows what his birth country looks like, and he can easily point to Sydney, where we live. The natural wood grain finish is a beautiful backdrop to his colourful prized possessions, and his boys room wall candy is all sorted!
